On this day in 1986, U.S. President Ronald Reagan proclaimed December 5, 1986 as Walt Disney Recognition Day. Proclamation 5585 was filed with the Office of the Federal Register at 2:08 pm on this day (the anniversary of Walt's birth). It was a fitting tribute, as Reagan (then an actor & a friend of Walt's) had helped co-host Disneyland's grand opening in 1955. "I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim December 5, 1986, as Walt Disney Recognition Day. I call upon all Americans to recognize this very special day in the spirit in which Walt Disney entertained young and older Americans."
